10 Quick Ways to Make Your Dance Partner Happier

bachata kizomba salsa tango Feb 22, 2023

In this post I quickly share 10 ways (in no specific order) you can make your dance partner happier when they dance with you. It is not all you can do, just a few pointers. You can read muuuch more in my book - "The Secrets of Social Dance - How to Become a Popular Dancer" which you can find on Amazon.

  1. Be attentive and present:
Focus on your partner and be fully present in the moment you share together. This will make your partner feel appreciated and valued.

  2. Maintain good posture:
Maintain good posture and body alignment, as this will make it easier and more comfortable for your partner to dance with you. Do not bend over or under your partner.

  3. Make sure you have good hygiene:
Take a shower before the dance and wear clean clothes. Use some deodorant. Brush your teeth and maybe use chewing gum or mints. This will make you more pleasant to dance with.

  4. Dress appropriately:
Dress appropriately and make sure your outfit is suitable for that dance, and comfortable for your partner. Avoid any sharp objects, like jewellery for example, that can hurt people on or off the dance floor.

  5. Listen to the music:
Pay attention to the music and adjust your movements accordingly. Listen to both the music as a whole and specific sounds to make a good interpretation. All musicality depends on perception and expression.

  6. Use appropriate dance moves:
Choose dance moves that are suitable for the music and your partner's skill level. If one or both are wrong, the dance will be much less enjoyable. Also, adjust your moves to the surroundings on the dance floor.

  7. Communicate with your partner:
All couple dance is communicaton. We have to communicate with our partner and make sure we're both on the same page. The lead sends a signal, which the follow has to interpret and act on. But the lead also has to listen to the follow's response and check if the interpretation was correct.

  8. Lead and follow comfortably:
Lead and follow your partner with confidence and clarity, and make sure it is comfortable - not too forceful or aggressive. Leads make sure the lead is comfortable, follows make sure to follow the intention of the lead and not exaggerate moves too much or depend on the lead for balance.

  9. Respect your partner's space:
Be aware of your partner's personal space and avoid stepping on their feet or bumping into them. And of course, always respect your partner in terms of placements of hands etc.

  10. Have fun:
Enjoy the dance and have fun with your partner. A positive attitude can go a long way in making the dance a better experience for both of you. And the best way to show that you are enjoying is to smile! Do it more!

That's it.

I wish you a good day!
